NMHC OPTECH 2023

Five Hot Takes From NMHC OPTECH 2023

If you're getting back into the swing of things at work after an engaging few days at NMHC OPTECH, you're probably processing your way through an overload of information. It was a packed event marked by record attendance, the unveiling of a new renter preferences study, and—if you were lucky—a remarkable U2 show at the Sphere. Among the array of insightful conference sessions and side conversations, a few themes emerged, five of which I outline in this post.

Look Who's Coming to NMHC OPTECH 2023!

NMHC OPTECH is just a week away, and I've been taking a look at this year's audience composition. At the time of writing, the total number of attendees has surpassed any previous year, making this year's show the biggest ever—congratulations to the organizers! Whatever economic uncertainty our industry is facing, the enduring popularity of NMHC OPTECH tells us that our industry's appetite for technological innovation is stronger than ever.

Multifamily Technology and the "Small Problem" Problem

Halloween is almost upon us. Texas has finally dropped out of triple digits for the year (phew). There are those who are excited about the presence of pumpkin spice in their drinks. That means it's almost time for NMHC OPTECH, the show that has so gracefully brought down the curtain on the annual multifamily conference circuit for as long as I can remember. However, some recent in-depth conversations with individuals I consider to be true thought leaders in our industry have changed my perspective on this prized commodity. These conversations have led me to think that, as one put it, leads may be for losers.

The Marie Kondo Effect: Thoughts on RealWorld 2023

This week I had the pleasure of attending RealWorld 2023, RealPage's annual user conference in Las Vegas. It was an enjoyable couple of days that at once offered a glimpse of the future of an evolving industry giant and a trip or two down memory lane. I will share my thoughts on both in this article.

Property Management Centralization Isn't one Size Fits All

Centralization for the Rest of Us

Centralization, as we all know, is a hot topic in the multifamily industry. This conversation began a few years ago when a few public REITs began to talk about changes to their property staffing models. I, among others, initially believed that once centralization started, everyone else would follow. If a few companies were achieving superior returns, the rest would naturally want to emulate them.
